We exist for one reason: Yorkies are not “just small dogs.” They are a breed with their own temperament, health sensitivities, and emotional needs, and they deserve a rehoming process built around those needs specifically, rather than a general small-breed process that treats every tiny dog the same.

YR is a specialist offshoot of the same founder and framework behind Small Dog Adoptions & Rehoming (SDA), South Africa’s broader boutique small-dog rehoming network. Where SDA covers small breeds nationally, Yorkie Rehoming narrows the focus entirely to Yorkies — because a breed this popular, this often bred, and this frequently surrendered deserves a platform of its own.

Why a Yorkie-Only Platform?

Yorkshire Terriers are one of the most surrendered small breeds in South Africa — often due to their popularity with breeders, their grooming and health upkeep, or families underestimating how much personality and clinginess comes in such a small frame. Generic rescue platforms rarely have the bandwidth to understand:

  • Their attachment style and tendency toward separation anxiety
  • Coat and grooming maintenance expectations for new owners
  • How Yorkies transition best — slowly, in-home, without kennels or cages

100% cage-free, home-to-home. Every Yorkie in our process stays in a real home — never a kennel, cage, or shelter facility — from the moment we’re contacted until their new family is verified and ready.

Private and dignified. We never post an owner’s personal details publicly. Enquiries, vetting, and matching all happen privately and discreetly.

Breed-specific vetting. Prospective adopters are screened specifically for Yorkie ownership — grooming commitment, home environment, and experience with small, sensitive breeds — not a generic small-dog checklist.

Referral-first for welfare cases. We are not a shelter, NPO, NPC, or registered welfare organization, and we don’t take in strays or accept dogs into physical care. Where a Yorkie needs urgent rescue or rehabilitation rather than a planned rehoming, we refer to established welfare bodies such as the NSPCA and rescues like SAFE.
